**Editor’s Note** Alex Karn of Peterborough This Week wrote an awesome article with event details of the Urban Spa 2.0 Launch Party! Everyone here at The Urban Spa is so excited to Launch our new space and wanted to get the Launch party details out to our readers and clients ASAP! [RSVP NOW]
The Urban Spa is a boutique European-style day spa and salon that offers a full-service hair salon, registered massage therapy and complete esthetics services. Owners Jean-Guy Francoeur and Kerri Holley and their courteous staff are well known for their professionalism and friendliness as well as consistently going above and beyond to give their customers a true V.I.P. experience.
The spa is located in the beautiful and historic 388 Rogers Street building in East City, Peterborough. It initially took up only the bottom level of the house, but is now expanding to utilize the upper level as well. Called The Urban Spa 2.0, the recently renovated space will exude a modern and sophisticated New York vibe.
“The spa downstairs has been so successful; we were often fully booked,” says Mr. Francoeur. “That was fantastic, but made it difficult to serve the groups who wanted to come in and receive services together. We love working with groups, so we decided to create this space especially for them.” He explains that although The Urban Spa 2.0 is a full-service spa that will open to clients most days, any groups of four or more guests will receive exclusive use of the space so that they can enjoy their treatments and enjoy each others’ company in a more private setting.
“We wanted to be able to offer an even higher level of service than we had previously provided, so groups upstairs will have access to all of the exact same services and treatments as those downstairs, but will also receive a customized experience with their favourite music playing, a flat screen television, a high-end espresso machine with a beverage just the way you like it waiting for them upon their arrival and more.”
The Urban Spa 2.0 also features a couples’ suite for facials, manicures, pedicures, massage services and more. Mr. Francoeur notes that a unique feature of the couples’ suite is that guests are able to receive a full range of services, and may even get different services at the same time while remaining in the same room together. “At The Urban Spa, we don’t provide services, we provide an experience that you’ll remember forever,” says the owner.
On July 23rd, The Urban Spa 2.0 will be unveiled at an exciting launch event which will take place on the adjoining parking lot. “We will have live music by local artists, a delicious catered meal by a local steakhouse, wine service, appearances by special guests and mini services provided throughout the evening,” Mr. Francoeur lists. The red carpet event will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with an expected attendance of more than 200 people.
The event will be open to everyone but you must R.S.V.P.
Many of you have heard the whispers that big things are coming for The Urban Spa… well you’re right!

One day out of the year, we have this beautiful opportunity to give back the people who have given us so much: our moms.
We love them (at times, maybe not so much) and as we get older, sometimes, we become them. Whether she carried you inside of her for nine months or is a non-blood related woman who has loved you like her own, most people can identify a person who they can be thankful for on this holiday.
So, Mom, this one is for you:
You are my best friend and you always have been. I’ve seen your love when you attended my sporting events, posted on Facebook about how proud you are of me and when you comforted me at times that life became a little too tough to handle. Not to mention, you have shown me how to love others and how to love them well.
Perhaps it is easier for me to take my frustrations out on you than anyone else in this world because you love me limitlessly and unconditionally. There were times when I was a total brat to you; I was rude, selfish and unkind. Still, you loved me anyway, and for that, I am forever grateful.
Thanks for letting me cry on your bed when boys did not treat me well. You always said the right things and made me laugh with stories about the boys you dated in high school and college. Thanks for always taking my side when it came to relationships and threatening any guy who posed a threat to my heart.
You never told me no and I appreciate that generosity. I know kids can be expensive and demanding.
From supporting me emotionally through my awkward middle school days, to sacrificing your personal time after your long days at work to talk me through my problems when no one else cared, to supporting me financially through college, you have always been there.
You have sacrificed so much in order to give me a better life than you had when you were a kid.
Life has been difficult and there have been times when I’ve felt like giving up, when things were not going my way. Each time, you were there to remind me of my worth as a human being.
You encouraged me to keep reaching for the unreachable and never settle for anything less than I deserved. No matter how bizarre my dreams were — from becoming president or a meteorologist or a professional dog walker or a food truck operator — you always told me to go after what would make me happy.
As I get older, I realize more and more how much you have done for me and continue to do every day.
This Mother’s Day, thank whomever you call “Mom” for being the best on the planet at her job. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.
**Editor Note** This article was published by Sarah Frank of Peterborough This Week but we had to share the exciting news with our readers and clients! Big things are in store for The Urban Spa.
After spending two years of building up a solid client base in East City, The Urban Spa is planning to triple in size and double its team of staff.
It’s a bold move but spa owners Jean-Guy Francoeur and his wife Kerri Holley say they’ve been booked up at the spa for some time and they need the space.
In fact, Mr. Francoeur says the business has seen rapid success since it first opened its doors in Peterborough– something he credits to the spa’s ability to cultivate a culture that makes clients feel at home while offering a unique experience.
“Right from the start, we knew we had to be different,” Mr. Francoeur says. “And we are — this is different than the average spa. We play lounge music, not Enya… we offer lattes at no extra charge and we don’t have magazines, we have iPads.”
The spa recently had all of its online platforms redesigned to become more mobile friendly and now nearly all of their bookings come in from their website of Facebook.
The focus on the digital side of the business has been extremely beneficial, Mr. Francoeur says, adding that equipping each of the treatment rooms with iPads allows the client to pick their own music and to cash out without having to line up at the reception area.
When coupled with European inspired design elements and a complete list of spa services, Mr. Francoeur says that the spa offers the whole package.
But it didn’t come together all at once, he says.
“We really did it gradually,” he says, adding for the first year, there was something new at the spa every month. “It’s not how I’m used to doing things but what’s come out of it is really the perfect recipe.”
He and his wife moved to Peterborough from Toronto, although the couple previously ran six massage therapy clinics in Ottawa.
“We loved Peterborough right away,” he says. “Now we are here to stay.”
When it came to starting up a new business, he adds they knew they wanted to keep it small to focus on their clients and staff.
“We protect our culture,” he says. “We hire slow and fire fast… the people who started with us are still here.”
Mr. Francoeur says it would have been easy for he and his wife to consider the fact that there are already successful spas operating in Peterborough and opt out of starting up another one.
But he advises small business owners and entrepreneurs to use Peterborough’s strengths as motivation, not limitation.
“Use the local resources, use the Peterborough Economic Development,” he says.
“Build something that enhances the local culture… be different and make a difference.”
The Urban Spa currently is planning to hire on about 10 more staff as it prepares to expand under the name The Urban Spa 2.0, which will have a New York inspired atmosphere.
But more space and more staff won’t take away from their personalized approach, Mr. Francoeur says. They’ll continue to protect their culture.
“When we get to know you and you come in, we’re going to be waiting for you with your latte the way you like it and with your music stations ready to go,” he says.
