Do you know if you are using the right skincare products for your skin or do you know how to choose one? The ideal skincare routine that should be performed daily (both morning and night!) is Cleanse, Tone and Moisturize. Performing these three simple things every day can get your skin on the right track, but how do you choose each one of those?
First you need to discover what type of skin you have! If you notice you have a sheen of oil on your forehead by noon you likely have oily skin. Your skin reacts very quickly to touch or you easily blush, chances are you have a reactive sensitive skin. One thing you need to be careful of is not mistaking a skin “concern” with your skin type! If you get occasional breakouts during that “certain time of the month” that doesn’t mean you need a cleanser for acneic skin, it means you need a treatment product for that problem area to use just as needed! Another thing to remember is everyone skin is different! Just because your mother or grandmother had dry flaky skin doesn’t mean you should be using her creams. Everyone’s face has a different concern so before you reach for her creams or lotions, be sure they are right for you first or you may end up with bigger concerns!
Choosing the right cleanser and moisturizer is different for every skin type. For someone with a dryer skin you may want a heavier creamy cleanser and thicker moisturizer to soften your skin whereas an oily prone person will prefer to have a foaming cleanser and light lotion instead. Whether you’re dry, sensitive and yes even oily you need a moisturizer. In some cases excess oil can be caused from your skin overeating to dehydration and the use of a light lotion can actually help reduce oil!
Now when it comes to toner you need to be aware what they are actually performing! Toners should be rehydrating and treating the skin not stripping it of all oils and moisture, those are astringents and are not usually needed. Toners are great for an instant boost of hydration throughout the day and also work great to set your makeup in the morning; a little spritz is all you need!
Aging is a concern among both men and women everywhere and although you can’t stop aging altogether, you can age gracefully. The use of a Vitamin C serum, moisturizers and most importantly sunscreens can help reduce your signs of aging. Over 80% of aging is caused by sun damage and a minimum of SPF 15 is all you need to help reduce that damage. If you have already seen some sun damage, we do have a number of products and Professional Exfoliations that can help but please talk to your Esthetician before trying anything new!
One thing to remember for all skin care products you use, most shelf life is 24 months. If you can remember how long ago you bought that moisturizer or that cleanser isn’t the same colour anymore its time to throw it out! Generally after 12 months the effectiveness of a product starts to decline and can sometimes cause adverse reactions on the skin. So when in doubt, throw it out!
